Masala Baby may have been created in Brooklyn, but it was born in India. Its designer Dipali Patwa has infused the collection with colors, fabrics and details inspired by her roots. Patwa features fabrics sourced from India, and her garments are created using traditional handloom, block print, hand screen, hand embroidery and appliqué techniques by local artisans.
Patwa references "delicious curries, authentic spices, bollywood movies, beautiful marigold flowers, traditional Indian roses and pink stone architecture" as inspirations for her line. Not surprisingly, bold color distinguishes the label. Patwa says her color influences come from "chaotic bazaars," as well as brightly painted streets, palace mosaics and the lively shades of saris and cooking spices.
For ages 6 months to 6 years, the collection is a delectable blend of two cultures. At one end of the spectrum, Patwa jazzes up typical knit baby bodysuits, breezy sundresses and hoodie lounge sets with Indian motifs or drenches them in vivid spice shades. In other instances she offers traditional Indian pieces, such as an embroidered kurta - a tunic shirt -that can be paired with jeans for a bohemian look. The designer has aptly described her collection as "capturing the brilliance of everyday life by weaving together the energy of New York with the vibrancy of India."
Recently Masala Baby collaborated with aden + anais, the Australian firm known for its line of muslin swaddling wraps. The partnership has birthed a 3-pack set of bamboo muslin swaddling wraps in three dynamic Masala Baby motifs. Named Mela, the pack is $39.95 and available here.
