Appaman Stays Cool

When a kids’ clothing collection comes out of the gate with street cred, it can be pretty hard to maintain. But season after season, Appaman preserves its cool quotient. Fall/Winter 09/10 is no different. Founder/designer Harald Husum and Brooklyn-born graffiti artist AvOne have collaborated on a group for boys. Look for super soft hoodies and T-shirts featuring AvOne’s authentic tag splattered across cool urban scenes.

The coolness continues right down to the tiniest of sizes as the seven-year-old Appaman launches layette. As one would expect from a brand inspired by the founder’s childhood friendship with a corduroy monkey, this layette collection manages to put an edge on sweetness. From the weathered hues and deliberately faded plaid pattern to the mixed textures, faux layering and raw unfinished edges, this layette defies cutesy. In addition to a bodysuit, romper, twirl dress, Henley, leggings and zippered mock-neck jacket, the debut layette group offers a reversible blanket. The pieces are available in solids or plaid. The color palette includes dusty rose, steel blue and clay.

Fall/Winter also ushers in an array of fun and funky looks for girls, especially those whoare more tomboy than tutu (although we could easily see a tutu over a pair of Appaman leggings or jeans). We like the tunic tops and tiered dresses with raw unfinished hems.
