babyNOIR is ‘in the black.’ For now that just may be a reference to the new clothing line’s year-round color palette. But when modern moms discover the hip haute couture collection, designer Kazuki Kozuru-Salifoska is betting babyNOIR will be a runaway success.

By Lynda M. Johnson March 22, 2010

Japanese born designer Kazuki Kozuru-Salifoska loves wearing black. When she became a mother she tried to find black outfits for her daughter Kharin, but the pickings were slim. Kozuru-Salifoska decided there must be other moms – especially her fellow New Yorkers – looking for black baby wear too. So she called upon her years of design work for Carmen Marc Valvo, babyGap, Eileen Fisher and Bernadette Conte to develop babyNOIR by Kazukistan.

This all black – yes all black – collection for infants and toddlers is as chic as the cosmopolitan mom it targets. The extensive collection includes everything from hand-painted cotton t-shirts and fleece hoodies to sweet but chic dresswear. The collection’s dressy pieces make the most of Kozuru-Salifoska’s keen eye for textiles. She selects fabrics that best translate the richness of her black palette. Don’t miss the velvet and organza rosette pouf dress or the handkerchief skirt in a delicate Swiss dot or the crisp eyelet dress.

To complement her looks, Kozuru-Salifoska offers pieces like the impeccably designed corduroy riding jacket and the luxe velvet cape.  In sportswear, babyNOIR  stand-outs include the cotton pique shrug, a cotton fleece apron dress and Asian-style Shalwar pants in cotton jersey. Accessories are also offered and range from knit hats and legwarmers to a muffler that buttons in place. Available in sizes 12 months to 4T, the line wholesales from $9-$49.
