It may be snowing in Connecticut today, but it's only October and Kid Cool and I are not about to stop playing in the leaves. Instead of the usual weekly homework packet, Kid Cool came home last Friday with pages to fill for 'My Leaf Book.' He had to spend this week finding leaves of different colors, sizes and shapes. There was also a place for a bumpy leaf, a smooth leaf and a fuzzy leaf. And of course a page for writing some sentences about the leaves he collected. There was also a cover to this leaf book, and according to his first grade teacher's instructions, it needed to be decorated. Fortunately, she gave her students two decorating options: either tape on more leaves to decorate the cover or create a pretty Fall picture with crayons or markers. Guess which option Kid Cool chose? The quick and easy tape job, of course.
He had an easel and paints by the time he was two, received the Play-Doh Creativity Center for his third birthday and has a desk full of crayons, markers and coloring books, but it takes a clever twist to get this six year old excited about creating art. Thank goodness we've discovered some toys that make art fun for him. Plain ol' Play-Doh or clay ends up rolled into tiny balls ('ammunition') for robot battles. But if I pull out the Martian Matter Alien Maker, he's game. He loves using the Lunar Lava gel and Meteor Mud compound to combine colors and mix and match alien shapes. I may not be able to convince Kid Cool to draw a colorful Fall scene on his leaf book cover, but he doesn't hesitate when I suggest we pull out his Leaf Art Kit from Magic Cabin (one of my favorite online shopping spots for toys, games and gifts) to create leaf creatures. He can use the colorful paper leaves in the kit to make rabbits, ducks, owls and more. The leaf kit includes 72 leaves, 8 cardstock backdrops, a glue stick and offers instructions on drying real leaves. Now he can take all those extra leaves we collected for his 'My Leaf Book' to make even more critters.
