New Baby Gift Rule: Buy Bigger Print E-mail

I love the gifts we received for Bee, but unfortunately she grew out of most of them too soon.

Bee was a big baby and she was in Newborn or 0-3 month sizes up until 6-8 weeks. Many of the gifts we received were in these size ranges and unfortunately without gift receipts you can't do anything but pack it away for your next child or give them to a pregnant friend.

During my maternity leave I was shopping at a local kid's clothing store and overheard a mother and daughter discussing what to get as a baby gift and specifically what size to get. The mother wanted to get a 6-12 month size and the daughter didn't understand why they would get such a big size for a newborn.

Being a new mom I interrupted them and suggested they go with a bigger size because the new parents probably have a lot of newborn items and it's better to receive something the baby can grow into than grow out of.

mamasaid1102sI think gift givers need to know that babies grow fast and I found that Bee would wear something once or twice and then it was too small for her. Getting bigger sizes also makes life easier for moms because we don't have to go out and start buying new clothes right away for baby, there's something already in the closet or dresser to put on if you find that one morning she has outgrown everything.

The top Bee is wearing in this photo is a monogrammed Ralph Lauren polo a friend sent us. I think Bee has worn it half a dozen times since we got it and now it has been packed away. Maybe one day it will fit one of her dolls.
