The Kids' Catwalk Returns to New York Fashion Week

Not since the memorable 2005-2007 Bryant Park kids' runway presentations from the now-shuttered Child magazine have we seen kids' fashion on the runway as part of New York Fashion Week. For the Spring/Summer 2011 edition of New York Fashion Week, petiteParade brought back the kids' catwalk. Favorites from the European children's runway shows were tapped to showcase Spring 2011 collections.

The Kids' Catwalk Returns to New York Fashion Week

U.S. importers helped with the selection. SCH Enterprises put Sonya Rykiel, Simonetta, Charabia, Monnalisa, Miss Grant and Roberto Cavalli Devils & Angels on the catwalk. C&C Childrenswear sent Custo Growing from Custo Barcelona down the runway. The Metropolitan Pavilion show also featured Inca Girls' sparkly swimwear and Firoucci's Love Therapy and Baby Angel collections. According to show organizers and event co-sponsors Aleksander Stojanovic and Tiziana Indelicato, "petiteParade is set to fill the void in the industry for a platform that generates excitement and high-profile coverage for the children's market, as well as related industries and businesses, during the industry's most celebrated week."

The most popular look on the catwalk was ruffles, which appeared in nearly every collection. Also key were designs inspired by different cultures, bold color combos and lots of sparkle and shine.

The Kids' Catwalk Returns to New York Fashion Week

The runway wasn't the only place to spot high fashion. The stylish kids filing in to model, as well as the children on hand to watch the shows, were dressed to impress. Whether worn preppy or funky, tutu ensembles were a favorite, along with layering, pattern-mixing and sophisticated city chic looks.

All the children had a chance to do some designing of their own, creating t-shirts before they settled down to watch (or walk) the shows. For a look at what they were wearing, check out Fashion Seen. - Lynda M. Johnson
